Health and Wellness
As an Academy student, you have full access to the on-campus student health center. The Engemann Student Health Center offers a full range of medical services in primary and specialty care, counseling services, health promotion, disease prevention, and stress relief.
You can make an appointment to see a doctor if you are not feeling well, or visit the Acute Care Clinic for urgent, but not life-threatening, medical concerns. Specialty care and counseling services are also offered.
The Health Center does not have an Emergency Room, so please call for an ambulance or paramedic assistance (9-1-1) in case of an emergency.
Mandatory Immunizations and Screenings
The University of Southern California requires ALL international students receive:
- 2 doses of MMR (measles, mumps & rubella) vaccine
- Tuberculosis screening (blood test) Tspot or Quantiferon Gold
- 2 doses of varicella (chickenpox) vaccine
- Meningococcal: Menactra or Menveo, the most recent dose must be on or after your 16th birthday. This requirement is for students 21 years old and under.
To determine whether immunizations are required individually, the USC Health Center will administer a blood test which will be scheduled after you arrive at the USC International Academy (usually after Orientation Week). If immunizations are required, they will be administered by the USC Health Center, which will also administer the tuberculosis screening. The Academy and Health Center staff will help you fill out the necessary forms and create a personalized immunization schedule.
It is your responsibility to complete all health requirements as instructed by the Health Center staff.
Students are not allowed to attend classes without meeting all of the health requirements.
International Academy students are insured by a plan through the USC Student Health Center during the term that they are enrolled. Health care services include doctor visits, information on health problems, allergy shots, minor surgery and X-rays, all of which are available to insured students.
The Student Health Insurance may have some small fees associated with seeing a doctor, such as fees for blood tests, immunizations, x-rays, and other tests.
Other Health Insurance Plans
The USC Insurance Plan is required for all students at the International Academy. Dependents not enrolled at the International Academy should contact Aetna directly. Plans purchased elsewhere will not waive you from your USC insurance requirement. As a result, we advise you not to purchase an insurance plan in your country or from other countries.
The Lyon Center offers opportunities to participate in sports, group exercise, and other recreational activities. Membership fees are included in the Academy’s student service fee. The USC Village Fitness Center is also open to all students.
Rec Facility Waiver – must complete before using the gym!
Tip: Bring your USCard when going to the Lyon Center! Proper identification is required for access to all recreational facilities (including fields and tennis courts).
Leisure and Fitness Classes are offered for an additional fee). Classes include aerobics, hip hop, muscle conditioning, cardioboxing, spinning, Zumba, yoga, martial arts, and more.
